In this case, we can use a model available on the TF Hub called Midas (v2), which is trained to output a depth map from a single image input. You can use even just use MS paint and color objects by how much they are to be in the foreground (white) or background (black) and something in between. The depth image is shown where the more white the greyscale the more the pixels are shifted in the texture map.īut now the question comes, well how to get a depth image? There are a number of ways using your own 3D rendering software like Blender and creating a model is one. I have created a Twitter bot that will post a SIRD if you want to give it a follow, showing a single image random dot stereogram of a shark. ![]() Fair warning, the results are hit and miss based on the single image depth estimation result, but some work really well. Once I learned how they worked, I had the idea to combine single image depth estimation using machine learning to turn any image into a SIRD, which I haven’t seen elsewhere. Well, that was enough motivation to want to know more. It was only recently that I realized I actually still, till about a week or two ago, didn’t know how they worked - 25 years after first seeing them, I still had no idea. It was a sunken treasure chest with sharks as the secret image, but I thought it was the coolest thing. I was introduced to SIRDs when visiting my Uncle, who had one on his wall - although I didn’t know it was called that. I distinctly remember the bugs and dinosaurs. I also used to love the red and blue 3D anaglyph images I used to see in science magazines as well. I used to be pretty into collecting Spider-Man cards, and one type you could get were holograms, which I used to think were the most amazing thing.
